  • All furniture, doors, high grip handles, floors and walls are in good contrast.

  • TV is hidden above fireplace (so when turned off wouldn’t scare people and cause any confusion with glare and reflection).

  • Environment includes family photos and familiar objects to encourage reminiscence.

  • People with dementia require much more light coming into the room. Curtains are well spaced apart so it wouldn’t block any light coming into the room. The lighting is arranged in a way so the whole room would be evenly lit.

  • Sharp edges were avoided to prevent any injures. Surfaces mostly in matte to avoid any glare.

  • Pelmets offer a traditional domestic feel (they do not block the light coming into the room)

  • Cabinets on both sides of the fireplace are not higher than 1.2m. Bottom cabinets have glass door so people could see what is inside.

  • Fish tank was added to provide different focal point to the fireplace. Watching fish is very engaging for people with dementia.

  • Windows were created with low sills which greatly improves view to the garden. It also maximizes the daylight coming into the room.

  • Space bay the bay window was created so the people would have space for games, jigsaws and books. It helps boost stimulation and aid memory. Also provides entertainment.

  • For the room to feel more homely furniture offers a traditional and domestic feel.

  • To help with day time orientation and time (to avoid any anxiety and agitation for people with dementia) there is an 8-inch screen Unforgettable 2 in 1 Calendar and Day Clock which is placed on the shelve by the fireplace.

  • Furniture is arranged in a way to provide good circulation in the room.
